Project Description
Project Details

After doing an initial facility study, Hinge studio worked with Bike Works to renovate their existing 400 sf retail space. Bike Works is a non-profit in Seattle that works with youth to recycle bicycles, teach bike mechanics, bike touring, and other bicycle related skills. The retail store specializes in new and refurbished bikes, parts and accessories. In addition to retail space the shop houses mechanics space for bike maintenance and repairs. The primary challenge of the project was to create a bright, well organized, inviting space that could show off product, provide adequate space for bike maintenance and spread the word about Bike Work’s mission while still maintaining the visual character and personality so intrinsic to the organization, and of course maintaining a non-profit size budget. Through the liberal use of slat wall, a simple material pallet of paint and plywood, and modular storage for the ubiquitous milk crate, the new design capitalizes on every square inch of space. The true marker of the renovation’s success is that sales of dramatically increased since the project’s completion.
