Kate Cudney, Hinge Studio’s Founder, was part of a team of 6 architects who entered and won a competition to design a sustainable house that could be built for $99,000 in Houston. The prototype house utilizes a compact core and demountable partitions to create a highly efficient, highly adaptable 1200 sf dwelling. The home can convert from use as a loft type space for a young couple, to a four bedroom home, to two one bedroom apartments. The project utilized natural ventilation and passive cooling strategies, and rainwater harvesting. Advanced framing technologies and a modular layout allow the entire structure to be panelized and pre-fabricated, and results in very little waste.
