The Christ Episcopal Church in Seattle’s University District is a beautiful historic church. A 3-story school and office addition in the 1960s complicated both the ADA accessibility as well as making the main entry ambiguous. In 2019, the church vestry hired Hinge to document the existing structure and to propose solutions that would create a fully accessible building and would house a historic restored organ that they had recently purchased. The initial proposal included modifying existing stairs to house an elevator as well as an addition and entry feature to connect the 60s addition to the main church while softening the brutalist architecture of the addition. During the Covid pandemic, the church realigned their vision and has since hired Hinge to provide a revised scope that makes the church house fully accessible. The project adds an ADA ramp to the entry, an ADA restroom, and lowers the floor to make it fully accessible and flexible for other uses when not being used for worship. Hinge anticipates construction for this project in early 2025.
