Project Description

Perched above the Sound in West Seattle, this early-1900s home had beautiful bones and an enviable view, but its layout didn’t live up to its potential. The partially unfinished basement, cramped kitchen, and walled-off dining room limited how the homeowners could enjoy their space.

Working closely with Hinge Studio, the homeowners reimagined their home without adding square footage – just smarter use of what they already had. The basement was finished to include a comfortable guest bathroom and functional laundry area, with a redesigned stair improving both code compliance and connection to the garage.

Upstairs, the kitchen became the heart of the project. By relocating an awkward powder room in the kitchen, the design opened up sightlines to the Sound and created the cook’s dream kitchen: a generous island, full-height storage, and easy flow to the dining area.

Other thoughtful touches include transforming a tiny entry closet into a built-in bench with storage and turning the former pantry into a jewel-box powder room. The result is a warm, functional home that celebrates both the view and the way the homeowners love to live.
