Mullan Road Cellars and parent company, early Napa Valley Winery Cakebread Cellars wanted to create a tasting experience in Woodinville’s Wine Walk area that harmoniously highlighted the two brands. Hinge Studio collaborated with the wineries to pull colors, features and inspiration from the agricultural region of Eastern Washington State, home of Mullan Road Cellars while reflecting the mid-century period aesthetic that speaks to the rich history of wine country and the Cakebread family, who have been making wine for generations. The client experience was designed to feel reminiscent of being invited into the front garden and then beyond into the living room of the family home. The entry and public tasting room creates the open airy experience of a spring garden party by emphasizing natural light with a bright palette, garden motif wallpaper and simple furnishings. Thoughtful understated built ins house the necessary functional aspects of the tasting room without taking away from the primary focus of the experience (the wine). The wine club members lounge utilizes a richer color palette and eclectic midcentury inspired furnishings to create a comfortably elegant tasting experience. Cakebread family photos line the wall reinforcing the feeling that one has just been welcomed into the family home. Custom elements including light fixtures, wainscoting and a large scale wall panel elevate the otherwise comfortable homey feel of the space. The feature wall panel takes its inspiration from an aerial photograph of some of the vine yards in Royal Slope region of Eastern Washington from which Mullan Road Cellars sources its grapes.
