Project Description

This sweet timber frame cabin sits at the end of River Road in Plain, Washington. The orientation and layout of the structure was carefully studied to optimize this incredible site with it’s views to the Wenatchee River and Big Jim Mountain beyond. The owner’s, life long environmental scientists, worked closely with Hinge to select materials and systems to reduce energy consumption and the impact on the environment. The building employs thick super insulated walls, and a Structurally Insulated Panel roof made from plant based foam insulation. Timber frame trusses and beams make up the structure. The owners worked with a forester to sustainably harvest wood from the site. The wood was then milled locally and stored on site to be used for interior and exterior mill work including kitchen cabinets. Live edge wood siding and hand selected river rock from the site are employed for the exterior cladding. This materiality combined with the modest scale of the building form which steps down from higher to lower roof forms creates a structure that sits in harmony with this lovely site. Window placement was carefully studied from both the interior and the exterior to maintain a balanced harmonious form while optimizing views and daylight. The main bathroom features a cedar soaking tub. A french style awning window with no center mullion was employed to create a feeling of sitting in the forest while bathing. This 2300 sf home houses 2 spacious main suites, an additional bedroom, ample laundry and entry to handle the snowy gear in this winter retreat, and a large sleeping loft. Hinge took great care with the scale and flow of the home so that it feels appropriately sized whether two people or 10 people are utilizing it.
